Roy Pickering, Winterset

Funeral services for Roy Pickering of Winterset were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, from the First Christian Church.

Mr. Pickering died Sunday, Feb. 14, at Veteran's hospital in Des Moines, He was 70 years of age.

A son of Frank and Martha Marvin Pickering, he was born at Leon, Iowa on July 24, 1911. He moved to Winterset in 1939, where he became associated with the J. C. Penney store. He later was employed at Allen's Shoe Store, and at the time of his death was a self-employed carpenter.

Mr. Pickering served on the Winterset Fire Department for 17 years, retiring in 1973. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the First Christian Church, American Legion, and local bowling leagues.

On April 9, 1939, he married Hazel Moorman. They were parents of two children, Marvin Pickering of Carlisle, Iowa, and Mrs. Sue Mease of Winterset. Mrs. Hazel Pickering died in 1965.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Ralph Pickering.

In 1974, Mr. Pickering married June Little of Winterset, who survives. Also surviving are the two children; a brother, Clifford Pickering of Columbia, Missouri; a sister, Thelma Black of Leon, Iowa; and four grandchildren.

Officiating at the funeral this Tuesday was the Rev. David Livingston. Burial was in Winterset cemetery, with American Legion Post 184 providing military graveside rites.
