Ernest Speer, Winterset

Ernest B. Speer, 90, died April 11, 2003, at Winterset Care Center North.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, April 15, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset with the Rev. Robert Barrick officiating. Burial of the cremains was at Montpelier Cemetery, Crawford Township, Madison County.

Ernest Speer was born Sept. 3, 1912, in Indianola to Otis and Nellie (Bland) Speer. He completed the elementary grades at Smedley School near Wick and was a 1930 graduate of Martensdale High School. In 1933, he moved with his parents to a farm near Patterson. On May 23, 1937, he married Mina Quick. Ernest, who was a life-long livestock producer, was actively engaged in farming near Patterson until 1975, when he retired and moved to Winterset. He was a member of Farm Bureau and served as a school board member for the Patterson School District. He also was a long-time supporter of the Patterson United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, David Scott Tibben; and three brothers, Arthur Speer, Howard Speer and Warren Speer.

He is survived by his wife, Mina, of Winterset; a son, Wayne Speer of Patterson; two daughters, Joyce Koehler of Indianola and Marilyn Tibben of Truro; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Patterson United Methodist Church or the American Parkinson Disease Association.
