Grace E. Mills, Winterset

Grace E. Mills, 91, of Winterset died of complications of a stroke Nov. 2, 2001, at Winterset Care Center North.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Winterset with the Rev. Dr. Bobby G. Dickerson officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery with graveside rites performed by Eastern Star Lodge A.F. and A.M. 43.

Grace Mills was born May 24, 1910, in Winterset to Delbert L. and Ruth Ann (Chapman) Clark. She was the great-granddaughter of Caleb and Ruth Clanton Clark, who were among the first settlers in Madison County. Her stepmother was Jessie M. (Jackson) Clark. Clark Tower in Winterset City Park was built with the help of her father and grandfather, Joel Clark. A 1927 graduate of Winterset High School, she also was a graduate of Gates Business College in Waterloo. On July 17, 1932, she married Charles W. H. Mills. Grace had been a secretary to Judge Philip Wilkinson and was later employed at Union State Bank from 1951 to 1975. She was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where she had served as secretary of the board and as a deacon and was a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship. She also was a member of Easter Star Lodge A.F. and A.M. 43, AVA Club, a sewing club, several bridge clubs and was a charter member of the Progressive Study Club and Lakeview Country Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her stepmother, two sisters and two half-brothers.

She is survived by a daughter, Ruth Ann Sandrock of Burlington; a son, Philip C. Mills (wife Joan) of San Antonio, Texas; as sister, Gladys Carr of Mount Ayr; a half brother, Harold Clark of Los Altos, Calif., four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Friends of the Winterset Public Library, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Winterset, the Madison County Health Trust Inc. or Middle River Hospice.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
