Ellen Phipps Mills, Des Moines

Services for Ellen Phipps Mills, 87, of Wesley Acres in Des Moines, who died Jan 25 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, were held Saturday, Jan. 28 at the First United Presbyterian Church, Winterset, with the Rev. Alan Parker officiating. Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery.

Born in St. Charles Oct. 19, 1896, she was the daughter of Robert Wesley and Nancy Ann Bradshaw Phipps. She was a resident of Winterset for 50 years before moving to Des Moines in 1970 and taught first grade in Truro and Council Bluffs schools.

She married Ralph O. Mills June 28, 1922 at Creston, and was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset; the Park Avenue Presbyterian Church in Des Moines; the PEO Chapter Q; and a 50-year member of Eastern Star. Mrs. Mills was a graduate of Highland Park College in Des Moines.

Survivors include daughters, Marjorie Ellen Martin of Clear Lake and Barbara McNamara of Des Moines; a stepson, Robert Mills of Winterset; four grandchildren, Mary Ellen Martin, Dan Mills McNamara, Scott K. McNamara and Mark Martin; three step-grandchildren and six great step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a sister.
