EDWARD BAUR, 78, Services This Thursday

R. Edward Baur, a Madison county farmer with state and national prominence, died Monday night, May 23, 1977, at his home in south Jefferson township. He was 78 years of age. Death was attributed to a heart attack.

During his life-time, Mr. Baur gained national recognition in the fields of soil conservation, farm credit, crop production and cattle feeding.

In partnership with a brother, Merritt, and in more recent years his son, Robert, he operated the family farm located about 11 miles northeast of Winterset.

The farm was often the site of tours by agricultural observers from throughout the United States and foreign countries.

R. Edward Baur was born on July 24, 1898, the son of Robert and Hettie McBride Baur at the family homestead in Jefferson Township. He was the second of four children.

He attended the local schools and later studied agriculture at Iowa State University. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity.

He returned home to help operate the family farm with his father and brother. In 1933 he was married to Lorraine Gutz of Pomeroy, Iowa. They were the parents of three children: Robert Frederick of rural Van Meter; Ann McBride Larson of Minneapolis; and Karla Eppler Tillotson of Des Moines.

In addition to farming and cattle feeding, Edward Baur devoted his energies to promoting sound credit for agriculture and good soil conservation practices. During the depression years, he was an organizer of the Creston Production Credit Association and remained a longtime member. He was a past president of the Iowa Soil Conservation District; a member of the Winterset Rotary; an organizer of the Cornbelt Beef Council and served as its chairman. He was a 13-year member of the Omaha District Farm Credit Board. In 1967, he was appointed by United States Secretary of Agriculture Clifford Hardin to the Federal Farm Credit Board and served a four-year term. He attended Trinity Lutheran Church.

Until the day of his death, he was active both in farming and in community service. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; his three children; one brother, Merritt, of Winterset; two sisters: Meriam Smith of Springfield, Illinois, and Eleanor Halderman of Des Moines. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Carole, Curt and Laura Tillotson; Jay and Theresa Larson; and Angela Baur.

Funeral services for Mr. Baur will be held this Thursday, May 26, at 2 p.m. from Trinity Lutheran church south of Van Meter. Pastor E. A. Brieholz will officiate. Burial will be in the Jefferson township cemetery.
