Melvin Edward Penrod, 79, of Winterset died Aug. 10, 2004, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 14, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Pastors Bobb Barrick and Steve Koch officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.
Mel Penrod was born May 21, 1925, in Cedar Rapids to Edward Clinton and Mabel (Huston) Penrod. On June 8, 1947, he married Patricia Lou Feddern. Patricia passed away in 1978. On April 1, 1989, he married Beverly Jane Smith in Odessa, Texas. A resident of Winterset since 1949, he taught and coached at Winterset High School until his retirement in 1985. Mel had been the master of ceremonies at the annual Madison county Covered Bridge Festival for more than three decades. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Optimist Club, Three Coin Club, Winterset Booster Club, Quarterback Club, American Legion, Henry Wallace Foundation and First United Methodist Church, of which he was a trustee.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia; a brother, Ernest Penrod; and a sister, Imogene Penrod.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly of Winterset; one son, Paul Penrod of Brownsville, Texas; two daughters, Penny Schupmann of St. Louis, Mo., and Julie Booth of Cedar Rapids; one stepson, Douglas Carfrae of Los Angeles, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Christine Book of Loveland, Colo., and Kathy Carfrae of Denver, Colo.; and six grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Mel Penrod Memorial Athletic Fund.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
