Driver of Gas Transport Victim of Accident Near DeSoto
Donald E. Silliman, 36, of Winterset, was killed last Wednesday, Jan. 18, in the crash of a gas transport truck he was driving.
The accident occurred Wednesday evening on highway No. 169, near DeSoto, just north of the Madison county line. It was snowing at the time, Silliman's truck skidded off the highway, the tank detached and slid over the top of the cab. The driver was thrown out and crushed.
The transport was the property of the Solar Transport company of Winterset.
Mr. Silliman was a life-long resident of Madison county, and member of a well-known family here. He was born May 26, 1924, near Peru, a son of Walter and Neola Silliman. He graduated from the Winterset high school with the class of 1942. In 1944 he entered the U.S. navy and served in the southwest Pacific during World War II.
He was married May 26, 1946, to Virginia Cooper of this community. They had made their home in and near Winterset since that time. He was a member of the Methodist church here, and was affiliated with Green-Rogers post of the American Legion and the I.O.O.F. lodge here.
Surviving are his wife; two small daughter, Sanda Marlene and Janice Dawn; his mother, Mrs. Neola Silliman; all of Winterset; three sisters and four brothers, Mrs. Darlene Mahan of Prole, Mrs. Deanne Howell of Santa Rosa, Calif., Doyle Silliman of Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Deloris Addy of Sacramento, Calif., Dick Silliman of Winterset, Duane Silliman of Phoenix and Dwight Silliman of Winterset.
Funeral services were held Sunday from the Winterset Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. John C. Porath. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
