Obituary

Died on Wednesday, Feb. 11h, at her residence in Jefferson township Mrs. Mary Smith, aged 72 years, 10 months and 1 day.

Grandma Smith as she was called, was born in New York state April 3d, 1818. She was married to Jackson Smith July __th. 1837, and lived on a farm in Ohio until 1864 when they moved to Iowa and settled on the farm where she has lived ever since. Her husband died in May 1880, since which time she has remained a widow, her son Sidney, living in the same house with her. She was the mother of twelve children, six of whom survive her. One son, Henry had just started for California and not much more than reached there when word was sent of his mothers death.

Grandma, as she was call by all, was a devoted christian and a member of the M. E. church to which she had belonged for 56 years. She was a thorough Methodist, loyal to her doctrine and usages and a cheerful supporter of all her economy. The itinerant minister was always a welcome guest and a class meeting to her was a Bethel indeed. Humility and gentleness were crowning graces, and a kind heart and helpful hand was always shown to those in need. All who knew her loved her and she died without an enemy in the world.

Friends and neighbors extend to the bereaved children and grand children their tenderest sympathy and join with them in mourning the demise of this mother in Israel. She was buried beside her husband and daughter in Jefferson cemetery. Thus one by one the old landmarks are passing away.
