We are informed that James Short, of South township, formerly of this city, died after a short illness last week. Mr. S. had recently retuned from a protracted visit to Illinois.

Mr. Short was an excellent man, highly esteemed to all who knew him. He has had many ups and downs in life; has been rich and poor many times.

He was the friend of Abraham Lincoln. They were boys together, and in Mr. Lincoln's earlier days he resided beneath the roof of Mr. Short's father. When Mr. Lincoln became President he remembered his old friend, then living in California, and appointed him to an important office in that State.

Mr. Short was then in comfortable circumstances, but soon after some sharpers cheated him out of all he had. He then returned to the States, and finally settled among us. His joys and sorrows are over so far as this earth is concerned.
