ERWIN HOWELL Dies at 78

Erwin Miller Howell, a participant in Madison County government, agriculture and business for over half a century, died last Friday, September 28, 1973 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. He was 78 years of age.

Mr. Howell was born Januay 8, 1895 in Madison county, the son of Lanson and Mary E. Williams Howell He was married October 17, 1915 in Des Moines to Vida Marie Hastie, who preceded him in death in December of 1967.

A lifetime resident of the county, Mr. Howell was engaged in farming and was later employed with Mills Motor Company of Winterset. He was a past president of the Patterson School Board and served as a Madison county supervisor between 1937 and 1945.

Mr. Howell was affiliated with the First United Methodist Church of Patterson and was a fifty year member of the Masonic Lodge in Winterset.

Surviving Mr. Howell is a son, Nelson Howell of Prole, Iowa; three daughters, Mrs. Helen Jackson of Winterset, Mrs. Edith Richards of Sacramento, California and Mrs. Maxine Minnick of Ordway, Colorado; ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mr. Howell is also survived by three brothers, Dorwin Howell of Winterset, Russell Howell of Vallejo, California and Curtis Howell of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, October 1, 1973 at 10:30 a.m. from the Patterson Methodist Church, with burial at the Montpelier Cemetery, Patterson. The Rev. W. Eldon Ringle officiated.
