Death of John Kirkland

Jno. Kirkland died last Friday from wounds received in his encounter with a bull on last Wednesday, an account of which was in last week's REPORTER.

Mr. Kirkland was born in Arnagh county, Ireland, on March 23rd, 1845. He came to America in 1853 and has resided in Madison county until death claimed him on June 19, 1908, being 63 years, 2 months and 27 days of age.

In 1868 he was married to Miss Anna Swartz and to this union five children were born, all of whom survive him.

Mr. Kirkland was one of Lincoln township's most highly respected and prosperous farmers, a man who made his friends by the score and never lost them. He will be greatly missed from that community. The bereaved wife and children have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.

The funeral services were held Tuesday at the Union church in Lincoln township conducted by Rev. Atwood. The remains were interred in the Rock City cemetery.

John Kirkland, who was injured by a bull at his farm in Lincoln township, on last Wednesday, died as a result of his injuries Friday afternoon. Mr. Kirkland was trying to drive the bull out of a field when the animal became angry and attacked him. The details of his fight for life will never be known, as Mr. Kirkland was unconscious when found by his wife and died not fully regaining consciousness. His body was terribly bruised by the tramping and butting of the animal.

He was born in Armagh county, Ireland, on the 23d of March, 1845, came to America in 1853 and ever since has been a resident of Madison county, Ia. Death claimed him on the 19th inst. he being 63 years, 2 months and 27 days of age.

In 1868 he was married to Anna M. Swartz. To this union were born five children, all of whom survive him. They are: Mrs. Emma Coakley, of Colorado; Mrs. Chas. Rippey, of New Mexico; Mrs. Edna Leveke, Winterset; Mrs. Emma Callison, Winterset; Fred Kirkland, of Colorado.

Mr. Kirkland was one of the old settlers, and honored resident of this township. The funeral service conducted by Rev. Atwood, was held at Ord church, at 2 o’clock Tuesday, and the interment was at the Winterset cemetery.

John Kirkland, a prominent Lincoln township farmer, died Friday afternoon, two days after his fight with a vicious bull in a pasture near his home.

John Kirkland came with his father, Thomas Kirkland, to Madison county in 1855. His boyhood was spent with his father in hauling freight between Winterset and Denver. For many years he has been one of the most prominent and successful farmers of the county. Mr. Kirkland was about 65 years old.

The funeral was delayed several days on account of the non-arrival of the children.
