C. Maurice Powers, 85, of Winterset died April 30, 2005, at Winterset Care Center North. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 3, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Pastor Bobb Barrick officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery with military rites performed by American Legion Post 184 and V.F.W. Post 8142, both of Winterset.
Maurice Powers was born Oct. 2, 1919 in Adair County to Lawrence Vincent and Zella Muriel (King) Powers. He was a 1937 graduate of Winterset High School and a United States Army veteran of World War II. On July 1, 1941, he married Marguerite Shaw in Winterset. Maurice had owned Powers Implement in Winterset and Golfarama Golf Carts in Norwalk. A resident of Winterset for most of his life, he was a member of the Winterset Lions Club (past president), American Legion Post 184 (past commander), Winterset Fire Department (past assistant fire chief), Winterset First United Methodist Church and served on the Madison County Fair Board. He also helped erect the cupola atop the Madison County Courthouse 50 years ago.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Powers.
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite, of Winterset; one son, Mark Powers of Hiawatha; two daughters, Sharon Cole of Hayward, Wis.; and Diane Truckenbrod of Winterset; two sisters, Mildred Powers and Maxine Burns, both of Indianola; and six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Winterset First United Methodist Church or American Legion Post 184.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
