Thomas Gilmore Horn, 78, of Winterset died Dec. 10, 2002, from injuries sustained in a farm accident at his residence.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 13, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Pastor Robert Barrick officiating. Burial was at Montpelier Cemetery, Crawford Township, Madison County, with military rites performed by American Legion Post 184 and V.F.W. Post 8142, both of Winterset.
Thomas Horn was born Sept. 3, 1924, in Van Buren County to Thomas Gilmore and Cora (Channell) Horn. A graduate of Parsons College in Fairfield, he moved to the Patterson area in 1955 and taught in the Patterson and Winterset schools from 1955 to 1966. He then was supervisor of Transportation and Buildings and Grounds for the Winterset Community School District until 1986. His memberships included Winterset Kiwanis (past president and lieutenant governor), Winterset Community Educational Association (charter member), South Central District ISEA (past president), V.F.W. of Winterset, American Legion of Winterset (50 years), Iowa Pupil Transportation Association (founder, past president and current business manager) and the Patterson United Methodist Church. He also was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Harold Horn, Clair Horn and Donald Horn; and three sisters,Florence Renecker, Nellie Finney and Margaret Horn.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, of Winterset; four sons, Thomas Horn of Adel, Richard Horn of Ames, Darrell Horn of McDonough, Ga., and Eric Horn of Clinton; a stepson, Ronald Martin of Winterset; two stepdaughters, Peggy Sheehan and Amy Anderson, both of Des Moines, 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
