Jacob Levi Hurst, son of Samuel and Louisa Carolina Shutt Hurst, was born in Sangamon county, Illinois, March 26, 1852, and died in Winterset, April 27, 1924, aged 72 years, 1 month and 1 day. On March 12, 1898, he was married to Frances Lucinda Foster, who preceded him in death, Feb. 27, 1921. With the exception of one year in South Dakota, their entire married life was spent in this vicinity. To this union, one son, Raymond, was born, who survives the father. He was affiliated with the Masonic and I.O.O.F, lodges of St. Charles.
Mr. Hurst was one of a family of seven children, four of whom died in infancy. The surviving are, J. W. Hurst of Virden, Ill.; a half sister, Mary C. Jesse of Plainview, Ill.; and a half brother, John Hughes of California. Mr. Hurst was an attendant, when able, at the Methodist church in Winterset, and died a firm believer in Christ as his Savior.
The funeral was held at the Methodist church of Winterset, conducted by Rev. D. J. Shenton. The burial of the I.O.O.F. lodges of Winterset and St. Charles. The interment was at St. Charles.
