Lela Fay Butterfield, 99, died of complications of a stroke July 6, 2002, at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset,

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20 at Winterset Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Howland officiating. There will be no visitation.

Lela Butterfield was born July 31, 1902, to Felix H. and Cecil Hannah (Palmer) Simmerman of Barney. She attended rural schools in Madison county before moving to Winterset in 1917 where she attended South Ward School. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1921. Following graduation, she attended Grinnell College and Iowa State Teachers College (University of Northern Iowa). On June 2, 1926, she married Charles D. Butterfield. Before her marriage, Lela taught in rural schools of Iowa, in Sanborn and at North Ward School in Winterset. She also worked part time during the 1960s and 1970s at the Winterset Public Library. She was a member of the Winterset First United Presbyterian Church (83 years), Chapter AG, P.E.O. (78 years) and the Women's Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a son-in-law.

She is survived by a daughter, Jane Butterfield Davis of Stockton, Mo.; a son, John Charles Butterfield (wife Bonnie) of St. Louis, Mo.; seven grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset, Friends of the Winterset Public Library or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Services in Winterset.
