John Hamilton was born near Durham, England, May 17, 1841 and died at his home in Winterset, Aug. 31, 1914, age 73 years, 3 months and 14 days. His parents came to America when he was five years old and settled in St. Louis, Mo., where they lived for ten years, moving from there to Cook county, Illinois.

He enlisted August 11, 1862 in the 113th Illinois, and served until the close of the war.

He was married in Barrington, Ill. Feb. 1, 1866 to Lydia A. Freeman. Eight children were born to this union, four of whom are living, Mrs. Edith Tilton, Norwalk; Mrs. Pearl Nibo, Huron, S. D.; Mrs. Will Maxwell and Hayes Hamilton, Winterset.

He came to Madison county in the year 1868 and settled on a farm east of Winterset.

He united with the Church of Christ under the preaching of Butler Bird and has served the church as teacher and superintendent of Sunday school, and has taken a deep interest in the Kingdom.

He will be greatly missed in the church and in the bible school.

His genial, good nature was always an inspiration to all around him. The family moved to Winterset about ten years ago, and moved into the present home, August 1st.

Besides those mentioned above, he leaves one brother, Joe Hamilton, Salyx, Iowa, and three sisters, Mrs. Barbara Mather, Sargeants Bluffs, Iowa; Mrs. Jane Hawey, Hebron, Nebr.; Mrs. Margaret Fuller, Elgin, Ill., and a host of friends to mourn his death.

Funeral services on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Church of Christ, conducted by Rev. L. F. Davis. Interment in Rock City cemetery.

Death of John Hamilton

John Hamilton died at his home on North First street on Monday evening. He had been in poor health for some months past, but his last illness was of short duration, and the announcement of his death was a profound shock to many of his friends in this community.

He was a native of England and came to this county in 1868, locating on a farm in Union township. About ten years ago he moved to Winterset and about one month ago, himself and his wife moved to their new home in the north part of the city.

He leaves a wife and four children: Mrs. Edith Tilton of Norwalk, Mrs. Pearl Niblo of Huron, South Dakota, Mrs. Will Maxwell and Hays Hamilton of this county.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon from the Church of Christ.

The deceased was a veteran of the civil War having served in the 113th Illinois Infantry.
