Mrs. Melissa Gibson

Melissa Benedict, daughter of John and Amy Benedict was born March 27, 1841 in Morrow county, Ohio, and died at her home in Winterset Nov. 18, 1914, aged 73 years, 7 months and 21 days. She came in her girlhood with her parents to Washington county, Indiana. About 1876 she moved to Mahaska county, Iowa, where she successfully taught school. Returning to Richmond, Ind., she served as matron of the Earlham colldge, the board of trustees placing great confidence in her honor and ability.

She was a loving and faithful daughter, and when her father died, she returned to Iowa to help care for her aged mother.

She was united in marriage with Gideon Gibson on June 2, 1877 and for a time their home was near Afton. No children were born to this union, but Mr. and Mrs. Gibson adopted a son, Charles H. now of Dallas, S. D., who has been a credit and honor to this mother. They also fostered a daughter, Mrs. John Parkins, who has returned her tender loving care. She loved these children as her own.

Mrs. Gibson has made her home in and near Winterset since 1896. Her husband preceeded her to the other side in 1899. She has been a life long member of the Friends church, a true child of God. Living at a distance from the church of her choice, she enjoyed worshipping with other Christian people.

She was a faithful wife, a loving mother and had a heart ever overflowing for the good of others. She leaves to mourn her loss, her children, two sisters, one brother, many relatives and a host of friends.
