SID WHITE Dies at 62

A familiar figure in the activities of Winterset school students for many years, Sidney (Sid) Merrill White, died Wednesday, October 6, 1976, at the age of 62. He was a retired school custodian and bus driver, grounds keeper for the high school athletic field and grandstand announcer for the home teams through many seasons. His employment and volunteer work for the Winterset school district extended over 25 years.

Born May 14, 1914 in Red Oak, Iowa, Sid White was the son of Sidney White and Gertrude DeWitt White. He was married to Jessie Baker on September 4, 1934 in Des Moines.

A resident of Madison County for 54 years, Sid White was affiliated with the First Christian Church of Winterset, a member of the American Legion and the Winterset Booster Club.

Survivors include his wife, Jessie; two sons, Major Bill K. White, U.S.M.C., China Lake, California; Bart White, West Des Moines; one daughter, Kay Lindstrom, U.S.M.C., Portland, Oregon; and five grandchildren.

Also surviving are two brothers, Lawrence White of Winterset and Robert White of Red Bluff, California. Mr. White was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Myrlee Smith, Mildred Letz and Mable Kastler.

Funeral services for Sidney Merrill White were conducted Monday, October 11 at 10:30 a.m. from First Christian Church of Winterset, Rev. Charles Updike officiating. Burial was made at the Clark Cemetery, Madison County. Military graveside services were conducted by Winterset Green Rogers Post No. 184.
