Page 3Death of Mrs. Ratliff
Mrs. Matilda Ratliff, wife of D. G. Ratliff, ex-county sheriff and ex-county treasurer, died at her home in this city last Saturday evening at nine o'clock after a short illness. Mrs. Ratliff had been troubled for some time past with her heart but it was not thought to be very serious. She was in Des Moines only two weeks before her death. She became worse the latter part of the week and her heart gradually failed until the end as above stated.
Mrs. Ratliff was born in Ohio in 1842. She came west and was married to D. G. Ratliff at Winterset in 1864. Nine children were born to this union and all grew to manhood and womanhood here excepting one which died in early youth. Seven children survive her. William, who lives at home, Fred, of Sioux City, Mrs. J. C. Mardis, of Omaha, Mrs. Leo Weston, of Seattle, Wash., Ralph, of Omaha, Mrs. Bert Herron, of Twin Falls, Idaho and Robert, of Des Moines. All were present at the funeral but Mrs. Weston, who was detained on account of sickness.
Mrs. Ratliff was one of the kindest and most indulgent of mothers. She raised a large family and was wholly devoted to her husband and children. They have all lost the best friend this world could contain for them, and in their sad bereavement they have the sympathy of the entire community.

Mrs. Matilda Ratliff, wife of George Ratliff, former sheriff and county treasurer, died at her home on West Green street Sunday night of heart disease. Mrs. Ratliff had been ill for several years, but her condition was not considered grade until about two weeks ago.
Mrs. Ratliff has spent almost her entire life in Winterset, and was a woman of wide acquaintance and had friends without number in the city and in the county. Her death caused profound sorrow.
Mrs. Ratliff was born in Ohio in 1842. Her maiden name was Matilda Danner. The Danner family came to Iowa before the Civil War. She was married to George Ratliff in 1864. Nine children were born to them. All the children except Mrs. Weston and Robert were present at the funeral. Five sisters and two brothers of Mrs. Ratliff are living.
Mrs. Ratliff’s birthday was on New Year’s Day, and that holiday was always a homecoming day for the family, which is widely scattered.
The funeral was held at the home at two o’clock Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Corkey of the Presbyterian church, of which Mrs. Ratliff was a member, officiating. Among the relatives present at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John Mardis and children of Omaha, C. E, Danner of Doniphan, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. Yates of Manson, Mr. and Mrs. A. B.
