EDWARD A. POWELL, Winterset

Edward A. Powell, 76, of Winterset died Aug. 23, 1998, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines of complications following a heart attack.

Memorial services will be held today (Wed. Aug. 26) at 2 p.m. at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset with Pastor John Shaull officiating. Burial will be held at Union Chapel Cemetery with military rites performed by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8142 and American Legion Post 184, both of Winterset.

Edward Powell was born July 2, 1922, in Madison County to Bertsel L. and Gertrude (Keller) Powell. He married Lorraine Shaw on Dec. 11, 1953, at the Methodist Church in Winterset. A farmer throughout his career, he also was a carpenter, a Madison County deputy sheriff and a Madison County magistrate judge. Edward was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8142, American Legion Post 184, Madison County Police Officers' Association and the Pony Express Riders.

Madison County Sheriff Paul Welch was chief deputy under Rex Rouse, beginning in 1977. Powell had already retired from the Sheriff's Department and was serving as a local judicial magistrate. Welch brought many prisoners before Magistrate Powell in those days. "Ed was fair, and honest in his court," Welch said "He tried to give the person a fair chance." Welch recalls he first met Powell when Rouse ordered them to return a prisoner from Anamosa State Prison. Welch said the prisoner escaped the next day, but was captured and returned to Madison County.

Lawrence Hooper served as Rouse's chief deputy from 1957 to 1964, then was succeeded by Powell. "We put in many 24-hour shifts in those days," Hooper said. Powell became chief deputy in 1964 when Hooper moved across the street to become Winterset Police Chief.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Marcia Meador (husband Meredith) of Winterset, Carmaleta Brose (husband Randy) of Lubbock, Texas, and Kathy Stine (husband Scott) of Winterset; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
