Grant J. Martens, 94, of Winterset died of cancer August 16, 1997, at Winterset Care Center North. Funeral services were held Aug. 18, 1997, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Van Meter with the Rev. Kenneth Belz officiating. Burial was at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Van Meter.
He was born Feb. 9, 1903 to Frederick and Anna (Russ) Martens in Warren County. He married Gladys I. Petri on Aug. 27 1939, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter. He was a Madison County resident for 82 years, a retired farmer and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Van Meter where he had served for 50 years as Sunday School superintendant as well as various other offices in the church. He had served on the board of directors for the Lutheran Home for the Aged Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers.
Surviving relatives include his wife; one brother, Irvin W. Martens of Winterset, and one sister Esther L. Storck of DeSoto.
