Charles Martens, Winterset

Charles "Richard" Martens, 76, of Winterset, died of respiratory failure Dec. 13, 1997 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services were Dec. 16 at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Pastor Jon Gaul officiating. Burial followed at the Winterset Cemetery with Masonic Graveside Services by the Winterset Evening Star Lodge No. 43.

He was born in Cass County on Apr. 23, 1921 to Peter Carl and Lela Margaret (Jones) Martens. On Sept. 14, 1952, he married Jane Rae Dabner in Winterset. After living in Massena, he relocated to Winterset in 1948 where he was electrician, owner and operator of Martens Electric. He was a member of Lions Club, Masonic Temple, Zagazig Temple, Farm Bureau, Eastern Star, and Winterset Chamber of Commerce. He was a longtime softball and little league coach and member of the Winterset Lakeview Country Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Lela Martens.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Jane Martens of Winterset; a son, Scott Martens and wife Cheryl of Waukee; two daughters, Julie King and husband Vernon of Altoona, and Sally Belas and husband Leonard of Des Moines; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Middle River Hospice or First United Methodist Church of Winterset.
