CARRIE TILTON Died on Tuesday

Carrie M. Tilton of Winterset, one of the oldest members of the nursing profession in Iowa, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 1949, at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines. She had been a patient there since July 23.

Miss Tilton was 75 years of age at the time of her death. She was born March 1, 1873, in Warren county, coming to Madison with her parents, Thomas and Phoebe Tilton, when she was two years old. Since then she had spent her life in Madison county, with the exception of 20 years in Des Moines.

She grduated from the Nurse's Training school at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines in 1909 and practiced her profession until her health failed a few years ago. She served through World War I in the Army Nurse corps. She spent 14 months at Camp Bowle, Tex., and was supervisor of nurses at the Lewiston, Idaho hospital. She was a charter member of Argonne post No. 60, of Des Moines.

Miss Tilton was a long-time member of the Methodist church, and was always active in community affairs. As late as 1942 she gave feely of her time in order to teach a class of 21 mothers in how to care for the sick.

She was a member of a family of 10 children, one brother, E. J. Tilton preceding her in death. She leaves four sisters and four brothers, Cora M. Tilton and Mrs. Lenore Cessna of Winterset, Mrs. O. G. Perkins of Prole, Mrs. George Murphy of Davenport, B. E. Tilton of West Point, Mont., W. H Tilton of Lorimor, and Homer G. Tilton and Ted A. Tilton of Winterset.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. this Friday from the Winterset Methodist church, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. G. L. Hufstader, and with American Legion ritual. Burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.
