A. Earle Null, a life-long resident of Winterset, and one of this community's most widely-known citizens throughout his life, died at the Madison county Memorial hospital in Winterset, Sunday, April 18, 1954. He had entered the hospital April 7 for treatment of a heart condition.
Mr. Null was 58 years of age. He was born at Winterset Dec. 28, 1895, a son of Finley E. and Sylvia Null. He was reared in this community and attended the public schools here.
As a young man he enlisted in Winterset's Company A, Iowa National Guard. He had advanced to the grade of sergeant when that company was mobilized to participate in the Mexican Border campaign of 1915 and 1916. In August of 1917, after returning from the Border campaign, the company again was called into federal service by World War I. He went to France with the Rainbow division, and participated in battles in the Lorraine sector in May and July of 1918, at which time he was gassed. In August of 1918, he took part in the battles of the Champagne sector, notably Chateau Thierry. In August of 1918, he was returned to the United States. He was stationed at Camp Dodge to help train soldiers for battle.
Following the war, he was married August 25, 1922, to Miss Sue Lenocker of Dexter. They were parents of two children, a son, Jack, and a daughter, Suzanne.
After his marriage, Mr. Null was employed for several years as an automobile mechanic. He later served as Winterset city marshall and for eight years, from 1934 to 1942, he was sheriff of Madison County. From 1942 to 1951, he served as drivers' license examiner for the state of Iowa, and since 1951, had been district probation officer.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Winterset, the Knights of Pythias lodge, the American Legion, and was a former member of the Winterset Lions club.
Surviving are his wife; the son, Jack Null of Des Moines; the daughter, Suzanne, who is a senior student at the Winterset high school; a sister, Mrs. D. R. Hardcastle of Bristow, Okla., and a brother Carleton Null of Oakland, Calif.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the First Presbyterian church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. George Del Fisher, assisted by the Rev. Pearle R. Stevens of Lincoln, Nebr. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
Military graveside rites were conducted by a firing squad from Green Rogers Legion post of which he was a former commander. Two former Co. A. men, Bert Boats and Otto Saiergster of Des Moines took part in the services, with the Rainbow Division colors.
