Wednesday, May 16, 1956Dr. J. Willard Bunker, well known Winterset and Madison county resident, died at the Madison County Memorial hospital, Sunday May 13th, at the age of 80 years. "Doc" as he was familiarly known had been in failing health for several years, but became critically ill, Sunday morning, when he suffered a servere stroke, at his home, and was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he died a few hours later.
Dr. Bunker was born in Ironton, Wisconsin, a son of Oscar and Julia St. Clair Bunker. His parents were Quakers and when he was a boy, the family moved to New Providence; that was his home, until he came to Winterset in 1902. He was graduated from Iowa state college in 1900, and then went to the Chicago Veterinary college where he received his degree in 1902.
He began his practice here, and was married to Ada Nicholson, a native of Winterset, June 29, 1905. Since Christmas day, in 1912, they have lived in the home they built on West Jefferson St.
While at Ames, he was a member of the college football team, having as his coach "Pop" Warner. Since then he has taken a keen interest in sporting events, and fishing and hunting were his hobbies, as long as his health permitted.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and of the Knights of Pythias. He was also a 32 degree Mason, and a member of the Shrine. He was a charter member of the Winterset Rotary club and of the Methodist church. He also was a director of the Union State Bank from its organization until a few years ago.
His widow, and their one daughter, Mrs. Harvey (Helen) Davis, and three grandchildren, John, Diane and Richard Davis of Orient survive him.
The Rev. W. W. Steinmetz conducted his funeral service at the Methodist church, Tuesday, May 15th, at 2 o'clock, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
