Carrie DeVault Died on Sunday

Native of Pennsylvania Had Come to Madison County in 1880

Mrs. Carrie DeVault, a long time resident of Madison county, died at a Winterset nursing home Sunday, July 14, at the age of 81 years.

Mrs. DeVault was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, on Aug. 6, 1875, a daughter of Jacob and Isabelle Crow. In 1878 she moved with her parents to Kansas, making the trip by covered wagon. Two years later, they came to Iowa, settling on a farm in Webster township.

She was married Jan. 1, 1895 to Charles H. DeVault. They were parents of seven children. The youngest died in infancy, and a son, Forrest D. DeVault, died in 1930 at the age of 33 years. Her husband died in 1940.

She leaves five children, Mrs. Ruby Sawhill and Orla DeVault, both of Winterset, Mrs. Reva Duff of Van Wert, Clair DeVault of Buffalo, Mo., and Gyle DeVault of Winterset. She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Dora Harpole of Winterset; and a brother, Roy Crow of Afton; 19 grandchildren; and 34 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Anderson home for funerals in Winterset, conducted by the Rev. W. W. Steinmetz, pastor of the Winterset Methodist church. Burial was made in the Roberts cemetery.
