Clyde J. Shearer of Peru, one of Madison county's community leaders for many years, died suddenly there Wednesday afternoon, March 16, 1949, of a heart attack. He was 55 years of age.
Mr. Shearer was a partner in the Shearer Brothers store at Peru and had taken an active part in the affairs of his community and of Madison County. A veteran of the first World War, he was a former superintendent of schools at Peru and had been in the general merchandise business there since 1920.
He was a member of the board of directors of the Union State Bank at Winterset, a thirty-second degree Mason, a member of the American Legion, and a life-long member of the Peru Methodist church. He served for some time as a member of the Madison county board of education and headed numerous Red Cross and War bond drives in Walnut township.
Mr. Shearer was a life-long resident of Peru. He was born there Aug. 17, 1893, the son of Ira S. and Rebecca McKee Shearer. He was educated in the Peru schools and Des Moines university. He taught school until the start of World War I, when he entered military service with the 100th Engineers. He served with the A.E.F. in France as a band sergeant. After the war he served as superintendent of schools at Peru until 1920 when he entered the mercantile business there with his brother, Claude Shearer.
He was married July 30, 1922, to Zella V. Krell, who survives him. He also leaves four children, Dr. S. K. Shearer of Pacific Palisades, Calif., Marilyn Shearer of Des Moines, and Dawn and Carol Shearer of Peru; in addition to his brother, Claude Shearer of Peru.
One brother, Walter Shearer, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Saturday from the Peru Methodist church in charge of the Rev. G. L. Hufstader of Winterset, assisted by the Rev. J. D. Stevens of Peru. Burial was made in the Peru Cemetery.
