Claude N. Shearer, well known Madison county merchant and banker, died at his home in Peru, Saturday, May 1, 1965. He was 74 years of age.
Mr. Shearer was a life-long resident of the Peru community where he was engaged in the retail business over a long period of years. He was born there March 20, 1891, a son of Ira and Etta McKee Shearer. He served in the U. S. army during World War I.
Following the war, on April 17, 1920, he was married to Berdie Emerson. They were the parents of three sons and two daughters.
Mr. Shearer was one of the original members of the board of directors of the Union State Bank at Winterset, and continued in that capacity until his death. He was a long-time member of the Madison County Welfare board, a member of the county Soldier's Relief commission, and had served on the Peru town council for many years.
Mr. Shearer was a member of the Peru Methodist church. He was a past master and 50-year member of the Masonic lodge. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of World War I, and had served on the Madison county Selective Service board.
He leaves his wife; the three sons, Dale Shearer of Worland, Wyo., Don Shearer of Omaha, Nebr., and Bill Shearer of Peru; the two daughters, Mrs. Bernice Miller of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Mrs. Josephine Rouse of Winterset; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Peru Methodist church, in charge of the Rev. James Nicholson. Burial was made in the Peru cemetery with military honors.
