Fern Algoe, Peru

Fern Loraine Algoe, 78, of Peru died of a heart ailment July 22, 2001, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held today (Wednesday, July 25) at 10:30 a.m. at Foursquare Gospel Church in Winterset with the Rev. Bob Epperson officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Fern Algoe was born Feb. 18, 1923, to Ralph Edward and Mary Elizabeth (Graves) Ham of Lorimor. She grew up near Lorimor and at the age of 13 moved with her family to a farm in Scott Township, where she resided for the rest of her life. She received Normal Training following graduation from high school and briefly taught school until she married John Robert Algoe on Nov. 22, 1941, in Des Moines. Fern was a member of the Madison County Porkettes, Cattlemen's Association and Foursquare Gospel Church (secretary and treasurer) in Winterset. She also served on the Human Services Department Board and the Scott Township Election Board, was assistant superintendent of the Open Class Economics at the Madison County Fair and had been the leader of the Scott Skylarks 4-H Club. For many years, she was the Scott Township clerk.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

She is survived by a son, Byrle Algoe (wife Beverly) of Peru; three daughters, Marilyn Smith (husband Norman) of Prole, Sherry Tolley (husband Ronnie) of Winterset and Connie Manny (husband Jeff) of Peru; two brothers, Don and Larry Ham, both of Winterset; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
