PETER CUNNINGHAM, Winterset

Peter Joseph Cunningham, 81, died of heart failure April 23, 1993, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A funeral mass was held April 26 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Father Frank Palmer officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Mr. Cunningham was born November 4, 1911, in Madison County to Peter and Marcella (Monaghan) Cunningham, early settlers in Madison County. He married Katherine Breen September 7, 1937, who died in 1970. He married Ruth Eike Breen on February 19, 1972, in Des Moines. A lifetime area resident, he was well-known as a farmer. Mr. Cunningham was a member of the Winterset Rotary Club, the Madison County Farm Bureau, and served on the Madison County Board of Education. He also was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Preceding him in death were his first wife, one brother, three sisters and one grandson.

Surviving relatives include his wife; two sons, P. J. Cunningham of Booneville, and Michael Cunningham of Minneapolis, Minn.; one daughter, Anne Gunter of St. Louis, Mo.; three stepsons, Michael Breen of Denison, James Breen of Houston, Texas, and Daniel Breen of Des Moines; four stepdaughters, Margaret McQueen of Sioux City; Pat Opstein of Omaha, Neb., Mary Seaborn of Sidney, British Columbia, and Nancy Kluever of Clear Lake; one sister, Dorothy Vance of LaGrange, Ill.; ten grandchildren; ten step-grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
