Rev. Newton Coughenour, Winterset

The Rev. Newton McPherson Coughenour, 84, died on October 3, 1992, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church on Wed., Oct. 7 with the Rev. Donald Frank officiating. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thurs., Oct 8, with the Rev. Max Goldman officiating, at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.

Rev. Coughenour was born on January 25, 1908 in Greensburg, Pa., to Samuel and Janet (MacElroy) Coughenour. He married Virginia Davis on October 14, 1944, in Manasquan, N.J. He moved to Winterset in 1970 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a retired Methodist minister, having served in Winterset, Alta, Independence, Algona and Dubuque. He was a 32nd degree Mason, order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine; and served as chaplain for 18 years for the Defense Orientation Conference Association of Washington D.C.

Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Surviving relatives include his wife, and three brothers, Raymond L. Coughenour of Lawton, Okla., Arthur M. Coughenour of Asheboro, N.C., and Harry Coughenour of Marion, Texas.
