The head-on highway crash which occurred the night of Saturday, Aug. 26, on No. 92 east of Patterson, claimed its second life last Friday.
Francis J. Drake, 19 year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Drake of near Patterson, died at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines, Friday, Sept. 1, 1950, just six days after the fatal accident. He had never recovered consciousness since the crash.
Francis Drake was born in Crawford township Sept 8, 1930, and was a life-long resident of Madison County, except for the year from Sept. 20, 1948, to Sept. 21, 1949, when he served in the U. S. Army. His basic training was at Ft. Riley, Kan., and the balance of his service was at Ft. Sill, Okla. He was a member of the army reserve corps, and had been recalled to report for active duty on Sept. 15.
In addition to his parents, he leaves a half-brother Russell Townsley, and a sister, Mrs. Murray Rankin, both of Des Moines, and the following brothers and sisters at home; Glenn, Donovan, John, Donna, Mary Jo, Marlys, Fred, Larry, and Janice. He also leaves his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Drake and Mrs. Nettie Snyder.
Funeral services were held this Tuesday from the Richards Funeral home, with the Rev. Paul Diehl officiating. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Francis Drake, Jr. better known as “Bud” by every one who knew him was born September 8, 1930 in Crawford township, Madison county.
He departed from this life at 9:50 p.m. Friday, September 1st, 1950 at the Veterans’ hospital in Des Moines, as the result of an auto accident which happened Saturday evening August 27th east of Patterson.
Bud was the son of Claude and Essie Drake. His entire life was spent in this county except the year he spent in the Armed Forces of the U.S.A., September 20, 1948 to September 21, 1949.
Basic training was taken at Ft. Riley, Kansas and then on to Ft. Sill, Oklahoma where he was stationed for the rest of the year. He remained in the active reserves, and had been called to report for further service at Ft. Riley, Kansas on September 15, this year.
Bud will be sadly missed by his many friends, but especially his family to whom he was a most devoted son and brother.
Those who mourn his loss besides his mother and father include a half brother, Russell Townsley and a sister, Mrs. Murray Rankin both of Des Moines. Others at home are: Glenn, Donovan, John, Donna, Mary Jo, Marlys, Fred, Larry and Janis. The grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Drake and Mrs. Nettie Snyder of Winterset; aunts, Mrs. Leonard Bindel of Winterset; Mrs. Clyde Collins of Des Moines; Mrs. H. H. Taylor of Sioux City; one uncle, Rex Snyder of St. Charles; also one nephew, Max Rankin and one niece, Denny Townsley of Des Moines. Several great aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
Funeral services were held at Richards Funeral home September 5 conducted by Rev. Paul Diehl of Early Chapel.
The body was laid to rest in Winterset cemetery, Green-Rogers post American Legion in charge.
