Thomas Leo Gillespie, Jr., 83, of Winterset died June 12, 2000, from complications of a blood disorder at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 15, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset with Father Ed Pfeffer officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 - 8 p.m. today (Wednesday, June 14) at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the family present from 6 - 7 p.m. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. at the church. Burial of the cremains will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 16, at Winterset Cemetery with military graveside services performed by American Legion Post 184 and V.F.W. Post 8142, both of Winterset.
Leo Gillespie was born Nov. 4, 1916, in Madison County to Thomas Leo and Elizabeth (Grassman) Gillespie. He married Jean Moss on Dec. 29, 1945, in Los Gatos, Calif. A lifetime resident of Madison County, he was retired from the electrical and refrigerator sales and service business. He also wrote a column for the Madisonian newspaper for many years. Leo, a World War II Veteran, was a member of the Lions Club, American Legion, V.F.W., Lakeview Country Club, Madison County Historical Society and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, a brother and three sisters.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Thomas M. Gillespie of Cedar Rapids and Daniel F. Gillespie (wife Marcella) of Richmond, Va.; a daughter Mary E. Youngkin of Salt Lake City, Utah; a brother, John Gillespie of Lancaster, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
