MRS. THOMAS L. GILLESPIE Died Saturday

Mrs. Thomas L. Gillespie of Winterset, a Madison county resident most of her life, died Saturday, Sept. 14th at a Winterset nursing home. Her death followed four months of illness. She was 87 years of age.

Mrs. Gillespie was a native of Churchville, where she was born July 20, 1881. She was the former Elizabeth C. Grassman, daughter of Michael and Johanna Mueller Grassman. Her early life was spent in the Churchville communty, where her father was a pioneer blacksmith, merchant and postmaster.

She was married Jan. 19, 1904, to Thomas L. Gillespie of Crawford township. The ceremony was performed at Catholic Church of the Assumption in Churchville by the Rev. James L. Gillespie, brother of the bridegroom. They made their home on the farm in Crawford township, where they lived 35 years, until moving to Winterset in 1939.

During most of her life, Mrs. Gillespie had been a member of Assumption church in Churchville, but since moving to Winterset had been a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church here. She was active in her church up to her final illness.

Mrs. Gillespie's husband died in 1946, and one daughter, Helen, also preceded her in death. She is survived by three sons, Frank and Leo Gillespie of Winterset and John Gillespie of Lancaster, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Marie C. White of Winterset and Mrs. Dorothy Melroy and Mrs. Irene Wright of Davenport; in addition to 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

The rosary was recited Sunday evening from the Collins Funeral home in Winterset for Mrs. Gillespie. The requiem Mass was held Monday from St. Joseph's Catholic church in Winterset, with the pastor, the Rev. Msgr. John W. Higgins officiating. Assisting on the altar were four priests, the V. Rev. Msgr. Edward G. Greer of Victor, the Rev. Fr. Charles Phelan of Des Moines, the Rev. Fr. Joseph Hines of Lone Tree and the Rev. Fr. Daniel J. Kelly of Davenport. Burial was made in the family plot at Calvery cemetery near Churchville.
