PNEUMONIA FATAL TO P. J. CUNNINGHAM

Peter John Cunningham, long time resident of Madison county, and a member of one of its oldest families, died Tuesday morning, at his home, two miles west of Winterset. Mr. Cunningham, who was 81 years of age, had been in failing health for several years, but became critically ill with pneumonia on Monday, March 30th. Death came April 7th, 1936, shortly after 7:30 o'clock.

Mr. Cunningham was one of the largest landowners of the county, and served for many years as president of the First National bank of Winterset. He was later president of the Madison County Savings bank and kept up his banking interests as long as his health permitted. He always took an active interest in the affairs of the community, and will be greatly missed by his friends and business associates.

The deceased was a son of John and Julia Cahill Cunningham. He was born in Burlington, Racine County, Wisconsin, on December 20, 1854, but was brought to this county by his parents, when he was eight months of age. They located on a farm in Crawford township, which has since been known as the Cunningham farm. On October 19, 1904, he was married to Miss Marcella Monaghan, and they moved on the farm, which he owned in Crawford township. In 1915 they built the large brick house, west of Winterset, which has since been their home. They had six children, who, with the wife, survive him; John, Mrs. Mary Baur, Peter Jr., Marcella, Dorothy and Catherine Cunningham, all of Winterset. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Julia Mulvahill of Lee township, and Mrs. T. Walter Beam of Winterset, and two grandchildren, Mary Katherine Cunningham, and John Robert Baur. His parents, two sisters, and a brother have preceded him in death: Joe Cunningham, Miss Mamie Cunningham and Mrs. Nancy Kelleher.

The Rev. William Hahessy assisted by the Rev. Peter McStay of Lennox and the Rev. J. J. Judge of St. Patrick's church, conducted Requiem High Mass for him, at St. Joseph's Catholic church, Wednesday morning, April 8th, and burial was in the Winterset cemetery. Pall bearers were M. Breen, O. E. Harrell, Ernest J. McNamara, Dan Murphy, F. S. Hamilton, George Bass, Phil Wilkinson and James Monaghan.
