Gertrude A. Simon, Winterset

Gertrude Annette Simon, 99, died of respiratory failure Dec. 27, 2000, at West Bridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 30, at the First Baptist Church in Winterset with Pastor Mike Carlson officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery. Gertrude Simon was born Oct. 4, 1901, to Warren and Fannie (Kiser) Benge of Winterset. A 1918 graduate of Winterset High School she received her teaching degree from Drake University in Des Moines. On Dec. 18, 1920, she married John Hubert Simon in Indianola. They had farmed in the Lorimor and Thayer areas, moving to Winterset in 1961. Gertrude also had taught school in Peru. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Winterset and had been a former 4-H leader and co-founder of the New Hope Farmerettes 4-H Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

She is survived by a son, Robert Simon of Winterset; a daughter, Marjory Grodt of Des Moines; a sister, Miriam Hull of Bradenton, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Madison County Extension Service.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.
