Richard Cooper, Earlham

Richard "Dick" F. Cooper, 73, of Earlham died Dec. 17, 2003, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 20, at Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with Pastor Linda Burnett officiating. Burial was at Earlham Cemetery.

Dick Cooper was born Sept. 20, 1930, in Winterset to Wallace and Edith (Fenn) Cooper. He was a 1948 graduate of Earlham High School. On Feb. 19, 1954, he was united in marriage to Helen Allsup Griswold. Dick owned and operated a DX station in Earlham in the early 1950s. He also worked for Merrill Crase (logger), Hallet Construction (1955 to 1964 on the I-80 project) Hunter Ford Garage (parts manager from 1964-85) and the city of Earlham maintenance department. He was an Earlham police officer from 1978-79 and 1981-86, and a reserve officer from 1986-89. From 1994-2003, he managed Madison Manor Apartments. From 1981-2003, he was a hunter safety instructor and, in 2002, was chosen instructor of the year for the state of Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Cooper of Earlham; two sons, Jerry Cooper and Jim Griswold both of Earlham; four daughters, Ardyce Lefler of Carmel, Ind., Debbie Condon of Colleyville, Texas and Carolyn Griswold and Dena Morris, both of Earlham; his mother, Edith Cooper of Winterset; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
