Wednesday, February 11, 1970EUGENE MCNAMARA Dies at 78 Years
Eugene McNamara, a widely known resident of Winterset for most of his life, died Tuesday, Feb. 3,1970, at his home in Des Moines, where he had lived since 1969. He was 78 years of age, and had ben ill seven years.
Mr. McNamara was born in Madison county, March 11, 1891 a son of John and Agnes Vaughn McNamara. On March 9, 1920, he was married to Annabel Perkins of Winterset. They would have celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary this year.
Mr. McNamara was an auctioneer, livestock dealer, and farmer until his retirement. He was a veteran of World War I, and was a 50-year member of, and past commander of, Green Rogers post of the American Legion at Winterset. He also held membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was a member and past commander of Veterans of World War I in Winterset.
He was widely known in the auctioneering profession in partnership with the late Billy Maxwell.
He long was active in the Aberdeen - Angus Cattlemen's association, and had served on the Madison County Selective Service board.
Mr. McNamara is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. George Smith of Palatine, Ill.; a son Dan McNamara of Des Moines; a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Berch of Davenport; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held last Thursday from the Collins Funeral home in Winterset, conducted by Dr. Paul Hann of Des Moines. There was a military grave-side service by Green Rogers post of the American Legion. Burial was made in the Winterset Cemetery.
