Irvin F. Edwards, Winterset

Irvin Fred Edwards, 90, died June 30, 2001, of multiple organ system failure at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation Center in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 3, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Pastor Bobb Barrick officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Irvin Edwards was born Feb. 21, 1911, in Madison County to Gaylord and Maude (Heaton) Edwards. A 1928 graduate of Winterset High School, he received his bachelor of science degree from Iowa State University in Ames, his master of science degree from Colorado State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He had been a professor of animal science at Texas A & M and Utah State. He married Zella M. Graves on Sept. 8, 1940, in Winterset. Irvin, also a retired farmer, had written an agricultural column for several years for a national publication. He was a member of the ISU Alumni, Madison County Farm Bureau, Madison County Soil Conservation Service, Madison County Fair, Madison County Angus Association, Iowa State University Extension Service Advisory Committee and the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. He lived in Madison County for most of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Zella, of Winterset; two sons, Frederick, I. Edwards of Omaha, Neb., and William M. Edwards (wife Jane) of Ames; a sister, Eleanor Stegeman of Salem, Ore; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the First United Methodist Church, Friends of the Winterset Public Library and the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
