Orval F. Simmerman, Winterset

Orval Francis Simmerman, son of Thomas Harvey and Elizabeth (Bedwell) Simmerman, was born October 9, 1912 in Warren County and died Tuesday Dec. 8, at Winterset, Iowa at the age of 75 years.

Mr. Simmerman attended rural schools in Warren County, and graduated from Indianola High School, and attended Simpson College. In 1929 at the age of 17 he began teaching in the rural school system of Warren County where he taught for 11 years.

On June 25, 1936 in Adel, he was married to Doris Louise Johnson. They had three children: Francis Dean, Donald Lester, and Delores Marie.

He began farming in Warren County in 1942. In 1955, the family moved to Winterset where he continued to farm. In April of 1977, he and his wife moved to Leisure Lake, a retirement village near Trenton, Mo., where they lived for two years. In 1979 they moved back to Winterset.

Mr. Simmerman was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Winterset serving on various boards and committees, as well as being Sunday School superintendent. He was a member of the United Methodist Men as well as a 4-H leader and a long time member of Farm Bureau.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Harold and one sister, Lela Heaivilin.

Survivors include his wife, Doris of Winterset; two sons, Francis and wife Martha Jo of Tuscon, Arizona, Donald and his wife Rose of Navato, Calif.; and a daughter, Delores Streeter, and her husband Rev. R. D. of Sheffield; nine grandchildren, one step-grandchild and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Zona Lauett on Friday at the United Methodist Church in Winterset. Graveside services were held at the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
