Lloyd Lawrence Sankey, 89, of Winterset died of multiple organ system failure Aug. 1, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 5, at the First Baptist Church in Winterset with Dr. John Shaull officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.
Lloyd Sankey was born Nov. 18, 1912, in Madison County to Alvin Newton and Myrtle Rebecca (Worley) Sankey. On June 6, 1936, he married Beth Hildebrand in Winterset. A lifetime resident of the Winterset area, he was a retired carpenter. Lloyd also had worked on the Manhattan Project (in the production of the atomic bomb) for the War Department during World War II. He was a member of the Madison County Historical Society, Winterset I.O.O.F. Lodge 136, Winterset Art Center and Winterset First Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a grandson and two sisters.
He is survived by a son, Lowell Sankey (wife Sharon) of Winterset; two daughters, Peggy Denly (husband Gene) of Knoxville, Ill., and Ricki Lowden (husband Larry) of Winterset; two sisters, Harriet McDonald and Dorothy Rambow, both of Winterset; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Middle River Hospice, Madison County Historical Society, Winterset Art Center or Winterset I.O.O.F Lodge 136.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
