Gretchen Brittain, Earlham

Gretchen L. Brittain, 67, of Earlham died June 12, 2003, at the Kavanagh House in West Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 16, at the United Methodist Church in Earlham with Pastor Alberta Ervin officating. Burial was at Earlham Cemetery.

Gretchen Brittain was born June 30, 1935, in Adel to John and Marie (Forret) Jamison. She was a 1953 graduate of Van Meter High School. On July 11, 1954, she was united in marriage to Marlin Brittain in Van Meter. She spent most of her life as a homemaker and farmwife, assisting her husband in the management and operation of the family farm. She also taught piano for 35 years, as well as being a part-time receptionist for the Madison County Chamber of Commerce in Winterset. Gretchen was a member of the Earlham United Methodist Church (organist since 1955), United Methodist Women, Ingenue Federated Club and Madison County Fair Association (solicited and organized advertising in the Madison County Fair booklet for 50 years). She also was an Iowa State Fair volunteer for eight yerars.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Marlin, of Earlham; two sons, Charles Brittain of Waverly and Donald Brittain of Earlham; a daughter, Marla Cory of Maxwell; a sister, Louise Sackett of Emmetsburg; a brother, Floyd Jamison of Humeston; and six grandchildren.
