Gayelord N. Herring, 80, of Dexter died Feb. 1, 2006, following a four-month battle with lung cancer.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 4, at the United Presbyterian Church in Dexter with the Rev. David Kincaide officiating. Burial was at Dexter Cemetery with military rites performed by American Legion Post 419 of Dexter.

Gayelord Herring was born Aug. 24, 1925, in rural Dallas County to George and Ethelend (French) Herring. He attended country school in rural Dexter, and, in 1944, enlisted in the United States Army. On Aug. 19, 1950, he married Norma Jean Snyder. Gayelord was very active in the Dexter Community and Dallas Country. He was commander of the Dexter American Legion, as well as past commander of the Dallas County American Legion and vice commander for the 6th District. He had been a member of the Dexter Community Club, Lions Club and Dexter United Presbyterian Church and a Union Township trustee. Gayelord was a mechanic for many years, operating his own business in Dexter, then employee for 20 years at Iowa Machinery in Des Moines. He also assisted his father and later operated the family farm north of Dexter. Additionally, he worked for Heartland Coop in Redfield. He also was involved with the Iowa State Fair as a security officer for 20 consecutive years.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Jocelyn Wasson, Ellen Leighty and Margaret Herring; and two brothers, Willard and Leslie Herring.

He is survived by his wife, Norma, of Dexter; three daughters, Sue Kolander of Slater, Karen Ackerman of Allison and Peggy Hutchens of Linden; one son, Ken Herring of Earlham; and eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Kuhn Funeral Homes of Dexter, Earlham and Redfield.
