Death of Mrs. S. S. Rhoads

Mrs. Sam S. Rhoads, one of the pioneer settlers of Lincoln township, died early yesterday morning at her home, at the age of 69 years. Mrs. Rhoads had a stroke of paralysis two years ago and her health has been gradually failing since then. About August 1st, she became critically ill, becoming worse until she died at six o'clock yesterday morning.

As a tiny girl, one and a half years of age, Mrs. Rhoads came here from England with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Read and settled in Lincoln township. She has since made this township her home, with the exception of three years spent in Kansas. She is survived by her husband and seven children: Fred, Nelson, Ralph, Earl, Mrs. Harry Sage and Mrs. Edna DeBok, all of this county; and Mrs. Birdie Betterton of Knoxville. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Stanley Gillett, will be held at the Rhoads home in Lincoln township, tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock, with burial in the Winterset cemetery.

Eliza, daughter of John and Ann Read, was born Feb. 8, 1854 at Billington, Bedfordshire, England, and departed this life Oct. 19, 1923. When about one and one half years of age, she came with her parents to America and went directly to Madison county, where she has ever since resided, with the exception of three years spent in Kansas.

On Oct. 24, 1878 she was united in marriage with Samuel Rhoads of Drakesville, Iowa. To this union were born eight children: Fred B., Mrs. Susan Odessa Sage, Mrs. Edna DeBok, Nelson Ray, Ross, Francis Earl, all of Madison county; and Mrs. Alberta Betterton of Knoxville, and Baby L., who died in infancy. She is survived by her husband, seven children, one brother, Ezra Read of Long Island, Kans., and numerous other relatives and friends.

She was a kind and loving wife and mother. Funeral services were conducted at the home Friday afternoon by Stanley A. Gillet, pastor of the Baptist church, and the body was laid to rest in the Winterset cemetery.
