Joseph "Joe" Benjamin, 84, of Winterset, died of an aortic aneurysm April 29, 1997 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services were May 3 at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. Pastor Jon Gaul officiated the services and burial was at the Stringtown Cemetery in Madison County. Fraternal graveside services were provided by I.O.O.F. Madison Lodge No 136 of Winterset.
He was born in Montrose, Colo., on Jan. 13, 1913 to David Elnathan and Mildred (Easter) Benjamin. He was a 1931 graduate of Winterset High School. He married Freda Fern Waldron on Nov. 12, 1933 at Ottumwa. He was a retired carpenter and millwright. He had been a resident of Winterset since 1915, having come from Montrose, Colo. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Madison Lodge #136; Winterset Rock Hounds, Carpenter's Union Local #106 Des Moines, and the First United Methodist Church in Winterset.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, and one sister.
Surviving relatives include his wife of Winterset; two sons, Eric Benjamin of Auburn, Nebr., and Charles Benjamin of Ottawa, Ill.; two daughters, Sharon Hann of Urbandale and Diane Zeis of Des Moines; one sister, Eleanor Hough of Winterset; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the First United Methodist Church in Winterset.
