Wednesday, December 4, 1963DOCTOR HICKENLOOPER Dies Following Fall
Dr. C. B. Hickenlooper of Winterset, dean of the medical profession in Madison County, died early this Wednesday morning, Dec. 4, 1963, at Memorial hospital in Winterset.
Doctor Hickenlooper had been injured in a fall on the basement stairs of his home early Sunday morning. He was taken to the hospital, where he lapsed into a coma.
The veteran Winterset physician was 79 years of age at his death. He had practiced medicine in Winterset from 1913 until his retirement a few years ago.
Carl Blaine Hickenlooper was a native of Taylor county, where he was born near Blockton on May 15, 1884, a son of Simon B. and Ann E. King Hickenlooper. In 1894 the family moved into Blockton, where he graduated from Blockton high school with the class of 1901.
Following high school graduation he started teaching school at Platteville, Ia. He was only 17 years of age, but taught on a special permit until his eighteenth birthday, when he received his teacher's certificate.
He continued teaching until the fall of 1906, when he matriculated at Ensworth Medical College in St. Joseph, Mo. Through his entire college career he worked as a laboratory assistant, until his graduation in 1910.
Doctor Hickenlooper was married Aug. 7, 1910, to Mamie B. Searles of Blockton. They located at New Virginia, where he started the practice of medicine. They remained there until 1913, when fire destroyed his office, after which they moved to Winterset.
Doctor Hickenlooper always took an active part in the affairs of his community. He was a life-long member of the Methodist church, a life member of the Knights of Pythias lodge, and a member of the Masonic Order, life member of the Des Moines consistory, and member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine in Des Moines.
He was a member of his county, state and national medical associations and an associate of the American College of Physicians. For a number of years he had served as local surgeon for the Rock Island railroad.
He was one of the leaders in the long struggle to finance and build Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.
Doctor Hickenlooper's wife preceded him in death. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John E. Peterson of Des Moines and Mrs. C. A. Johnston of Prairie Village, Kan.; three granddaughters, Sandra and Susan Peterson and Ann Johnston; and a sister, Mrs. G. A. Chancy of Winterset.
Funeral services will be held this Friday at 2 p.m. from the First Methodist church of Winterset, with Masonic rites following the service. Burial will be in the Winterset cemetery.
