James G. Beck, Jackson twp.; farmer, Sec. 27; P.O. Winterset; born in Ireland, in 1839;
emigrated in 1856; lived in Henderson county, Illinois until 1859, and then came to Madison county, Iowa; he was married to Mary B. Thompson in 1864; has three children: Lizzie, John and Samuel; enlisted in the Seventh Iowa infantry in August, 1861; he remained with his regiment during the war; was taken prisoner at Shiloh, and exchanged in September, 1862; participated in the battles of Belmont and Ft. Donelson; followed Sherman in his never to be forgotten "March to the Sea"; was discharged August 12, at Davenport; owns eighty acres of land.
