Vertis Garnmeister, 87, of George died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Iowa Medical and Classification Center, Oakdale.

Memorial services were Saturday, Oct. 16, at Lyon County First Presbyterian Church, rural George, with interment in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery.

Mr. Garnmeister was born March 6, 1917, near George, the son of Herman and Emma (Bunte) Garnmeister. He grew up and attended country school in the George area. He served in the army during World War II, from 1942-43.

On Jan. 22, 1946, he married Louise Hilbrands. They lived west of George. Following her death, he married Hattie Klinkenberg in April 1975.

They farmed west of George.

He was a 50-year-plus member of the American Legion.

Survivors include one son, Gaylord of George; two daughters, Mrs. Jim (Cheri) Koel of Elkhorn, Neb., and Mrs. Jack (Lois) McGinnis of Berthoud, Colo.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two brothers, Rufus of Luverne, Minn., and Albert of Knoxville, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; one brother, Herman, and one sister, Loretta Vandenmark.
