Rock Rapids, Iowa

Charles D. Menage, age 89 of Rock Rapids, IA died Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at the Lyon Manor Nursing & Rehab Center in Rock Rapids, IA.

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Monday, March 19th at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, IA, with Rev. Robert Chapman officiating.

Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids, IA.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 18th from 2 – 8 PM, with the family present from 6 – 8 PM at the Roste Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.

Charles D. Menage was born on October 17, 1917 at the family farm near Rock Rapids, Iowa, the son of Johannes and Gatske (Boomsma) Menage. He was raised in the Rock Rapids area and attended country school, and graduated from Wilson High School in 1935. During high school Charlie was a member of the Football Team lettering three years. After school he began farming with his family, and was married to Florence Nagel on August 25, 1937 at Rock Rapids. The couple remained living in the Rock Rapids area on farm south of Rock Rapids.

Charlie was active, served as past president on the Lyon County Fair Board Association, the Rock River Country Club Board, served as director of the Rock Rapids Creamery, and the town Santa Claus for a number of years. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Rock Rapids.

He enjoyed many things, such as bowling, participating in city league for several years, golfing, collecting & operating antique farm equipment. Most of all Charlie’s passion in life was raising, showing and working Belgian Horses. He was known for his teams of Belgian’s that he shared with the public by participating in area parades with his family riding with him on the wagon. He also worked for 18 years as a state employee managing the State Liquor Store in Rock Rapids, retiring in 1982.

In 1987, Charlie’s wife Florence died after 49 years of marriage.

On April 22, 1989 Charlie was happily married to Florence Pedersen in Rock Rapids. He remained active within the community until his health began to fail. On October 17, 2005 Charlie entered the Lyon Manor Nursing and Rehab Center in Rock Rapids, and remained there until his death this past Wednesday, March 14, 2007.

He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Florence P. (Pedersen) Menage of Rock Rapids, IA; two children, Donna, and her husband, Stephen Arnold of Goshen, IN, and Michael “Mick”, and his wife, Carolyn Menage of Odebolt, IA; four step-children, Cheryl, and her husband, Craig Anderson of Phoenix, AR, Kathy, and her husband, Bill Spyksma of Clive, IA, Rhonda, and her husband, Terry Peterson of West Point, NE, and Russell, and his wife, Margo Pedersen of Rock Rapids, IA; five grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sixteen step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Tracy, and her husband, Richard Arett of Fremont, NE; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Florence (Nagel) Menage; two brothers, Peter Menage and Leo Menage; and a sister, Ida Dell.

Memorials may be directed to Lyon County Hospice Program and/or Lyon Manor Nursing & Rehab Center in Rock Rapids.
