Alfred Richard Hughes – December 28, 1921 – April 13, 2011

Alfred Al R. Hughes, 89, of Howard, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at Madison Community Hospital in Madison.

His funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Agatha Catholic Church with burial to follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Howard. Visitation will begin Friday at 10 a.m. with a scripture and rosary service at 7 p.m. at Willoughby Funeral Home in Howard.

Alfred Richard Hughes was born Dec. 28, 1921, at Larchwood, Iowa, to William and Esther (McGuire) Hughes.

They moved to a farm southeast of Howard where he attended country school. He graduated from St. Agatha High School in 1938. He attended Grand Island Business College in Nebraska.

He loved baseball and played in the D League of the Yankees organization in Joplin, Mo., for three years. Locally he played for Howard, Madison, Winfred and Carthage.

On Jan. 23, 1960, he married Violet Ravenberg at Howard. He farmed northeast of Howard, worked for Amert Construction, Jiggs Lusk driving a milk truck, and driving a propane truck for Dean Sherman and Solar Gas Propane. He was an avid dancer.

He is survived by his wife, Violet Hughes; three children, Barbara (Glen) Minnick of Canistota, William and Thomas (Patty) all of Howard; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William; and a sister, Jean Hourigan.
